The ReefLine calls attention to the need for conservation of our oceans and shorelines and the impact that climate change is having on these communities through a stunning new marine art concept off the coast of Miami Beach.

Working with scientific data and studies from renowned scientists, international artists are designing an interactive art installation that will serve as Purpose-Built reefs and can be used to educate residents, visitors, and environmentalists about the importance of healthy coral reefs.

“THIS SERIES OF ARTIST-DESIGNED AND SCIENTIST-INFORMED Purpose-Built reefs WILL DEMONSTRATE TO THE WORLD HOW TOURISM, ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, AND THE CREATION OF CRITICAL HABITAT CAN BE ALIGNED. THE REEFLINE IS A SINGULAR INVESTMENT IN CIVIC INFRASTRUCTURE, PUBLIC ART, AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION THAT WILL PAY DIVIDENDS OVER THE COMING DECADES AND ATTRACT ECOLOGICALLY MINDED TOURISTS AND ART LOVERS.”

Founder / Artistic Director

“New York has the High Line, Miami has the Underline, and, in the next few years, Miami Beach will have the ReefLine.”

ABOUT

fish1920.jpg

A LARGE-SCALE ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC ART PROJECT

The ReefLine uses the broad appeal of art to educate and connect the public to the ocean and the importance of healthy marine habitats, coastlines, and coral reefs. It’s an innovative way to gain a greater understanding of the science around coral growth and advance knowledge on this important issue.

Developed by BlueLab Preservation Society in partnership with the City of Miami Beach, the ReefLine is an example of how creative ventures can be an important part of the economy – in this case, the blue economy, which includes ocean-based conservation, business, and ecotourism.

Once completed, the underwater public sculpture park, snorkel trail, and Purpose-Built reefs will be 7 miles long. It will be installed in several phases, with the first slated to open this year.

Where

The ReefLine will run north off the coast of Miami from 4th Street on South Beach, providing a critical habitat for endangered reef organisms, promoting biodiversity and enhancing coastal resilience.

Why

People think of Miami Beach as a tourist attraction, not an educational site. The ReefLine is a unique initiative at the intersection of art, science, and education, drawing attention to the important themes of conservation and marine life.

The deployment of the Jose Cuervo Reef in May 2000, and a subsequent resolution passed by the City of Miami Beach (Resolution No. 2A003-25203) in April 2003, serves as a proof of concept, and demonstrates municipal support for the development of artificial reef structures just offshore South Beach.

HOW

How

Conceived by the BlueLab Preservation Society in collaboration with Coral Morphologic, the ReefLine has partnered with the City of Miami Beach and researchers from the University of Miami.

The project connects with experts and scientists from Harvard University, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other institutions to serve as a real-world research site for artificial reef development and design.

The project received concept funding and support from the Knight Foundation’s Art Challenge Award 2019, David Garcia, Karla Dascal, Pablo Rodriguez Fraile, Michele and Don Soffer, Future of Cities, Climate Trade, Algorand, as well as endorsement from the XPRIZE Foundation.
