The ReefLine 501(c)(3) is a nonprofit organization committed to restoring marine and coastal ecosystems and fostering environmental awareness through art, science, and action-driven conservation.

In Miami, we are not just imagining new possibilities—we are rebuilding what once was. Through a carefully curated masterplan, we install hybrid reef structures/environmental artworks that double as natural habitats, offering corals a stable ground to regenerate and marine life a place to thrive.

The ReefLine blends art, science, and civic engagement through:

  • An underwater sculpture park, featuring site-specific works by renowned international artists
  • Hybrid reef structures, engineered to foster coral growth and marine biodiversity
  • A publicly accessible snorkel trail, offering inclusive, immersive access to underwater art and marine ecosystems
  • A marine sanctuary, creating protected habitat to support ecosystem recovery
  • Civic infrastructure, designed to strengthen the coastline and reconnect communities with the ocean
  • An ecological restoration project, committed to regenerating damaged reef environments
  • A research and educational platform, supporting scientific inquiry and public learning

Beyond ecological restoration, The ReefLine champions social equity by ensuring access for all communities. By merging disciplines and uniting voices, we aim to build a vibrant, inclusive future where both nature and humanity flourish.

Masterplan

By OMA

Led by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA, in collaboration with Artistic Director Ximena Caminos, The ReefLine masterplan brings together marine biologists, architects, engineers, and researchers to create a new kind of public infrastructure beneath the sea.

This visionary project features the phased deployment of permanent underwater sculptures that function as hybrid coral reefs. Overseen by local aquaculturists from Coral Morphologic, these structures support coral regrowth while offering artistic and ecological value.

The OMA masterplan follows the linearity of Miami Beach’s coastline, with installations located approximately 600 feet offshore. Phase 1 activates a site between the 200 and 500 blocks of Ocean Drive, previously permitted for hybrid reef use. Future phases are planned near key east-west access points and lifeguard stations to align with the city’s public infrastructure. Signage on land and docking points in the water will help visitors engage with this underwater cultural and ecological landmark.

Marine Acupuncture

Our Natural Ability to Regenerate

Marine acupuncture is The ReefLine’s cross-disciplinary approach that fuses high art with deep science to activate ecological regeneration at fragile points where human and marine systems intersect. Much like traditional acupuncture restores balance through precise stimulation, The ReefLine inserts sculptural reef structures into degraded marine environments, awakening the ocean’s natural capacity to heal. These interventions — both artistic and infrastructural — catalyze resilience, not just recovery, allowing coral, marine life, and communities to thrive.

This methodology reflects a shift in how we engage with nature:

  • From representing to working within nature
  • Using site-specific, ecological materials
  • Expanding art into public, coastal, and civic spaces
  • Engaging environmental justice and cultural activism

A Blueprint for Regenerative Urbanism.

Born in Miami, marine acupuncture offers a scalable vision for coastal cities worldwide — transforming degraded seascapes into living systems where art, science, and community converge. It is, at heart, a practice of hope: a belief that with intention, structure, and imagination, our oceans can heal.
