REEFLINE is building the reef of the future, where art, science, technology, and public life come together to help restore marine ecosystems and create new conditions for ocean life to thrive.
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by cultural entrepreneur Ximena Caminos and masterplanned with Shohei Shigematsu/OMA, REEFLINE is a pioneering underwater public sculpture park and model of cultural and ecological infrastructure off the coast of Miami Beach. Large-scale, site-specific artworks become a hybrid reef, creating marine habitat and supporting coral restoration, biodiversity, ocean literacy, scientific research, and public engagement in a living classroom that empowers future generations and collective action.
Partially funded by a voter-approved $5 million City of Miami Beach Arts & Culture G.O. Bond, REEFLINE is envisioned as an 11-phase, seven-mile underwater corridor developed over the next decade. By bringing together artists, scientists, architects, engineers, educators, governments, and communities, REEFLINE is creating a blueprint for how coastal cities can harness culture, design, and innovation to reshape their relationship with the ocean.

Masterplan
By OMA
Led by Shohei Shigematsu of OMA with Founder and CEO Ximena Caminos, REEFLINE's masterplan brings together marine biologists, architects, engineers, and researchers to create a new kind of public infrastructure beneath the sea.
This visionary project features the phased deployment of permanent underwater sculptures that function as hybrid coral reefs. Overseen by local aquaculturists from Coral Morphologic, these structures support coral growth while offering artistic and ecological value.
The OMA masterplan follows the linearity of Miami Beach’s coastline, with installations located approximately 800 feet offshore. Phase 1 activates a site between the 200 and 500 blocks of Ocean Drive, previously permitted for hybrid reef use. Future phases are planned near key east-west access points and lifeguard stations to align with the city’s public infrastructure. Signage on land and docking points in the water will help visitors engage with this underwater cultural and ecological landmark.
Marine Acupuncture
Our Natural Ability to Regenerate

© Taylor Griffith
Marine acupuncture is REEFLINE's cross-disciplinary approach that fuses high art with deep science to activate ecological regeneration at fragile points where human and marine systems intersect. Much like traditional acupuncture restores balance through precise stimulation, REEFLINE inserts sculptural reef structures into degraded marine environments, awakening the ocean’s natural capacity to heal. These interventions, both artistic and infrastructural, catalyze resilience, allowing marine life to thrive.
This methodology reflects a shift in how we engage with nature:
- From representing to working within nature
- Using site-specific, ecological materials
- Expanding art into public, coastal, and civic spaces
- Engaging environmental justice and cultural activism
A Blueprint for Regenerative Urbanism
Born in Miami, marine acupuncture offers a scalable vision for coastal cities worldwide, transforming degraded seascapes into living systems where art, science, and community converge. It is, at heart, a practice of hope: a belief that with intention, structure, and imagination, our oceans can heal.
REEFLINE is built on five interconnected pillars that form a scalable model.
First, REEFLINE enhances marine habitat through hybrid reef structures engineered to support corals, fish, and marine flora. These living installations strengthen biodiversity in rapidly warming waters.
Second, art is the key binder of the entire system. In a world increasingly numb to numbers and reports, art taps directly into public sentiment. It makes the invisible visible and creates an emotional bridge strong enough to shift awareness and behavior. REEFLINE’s sculptures become living reefs, but also powerful cultural signals that invite people to care.
Third, REEFLINE fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration, uniting artists, marine biologists, architects, engineers, materials scientists, educators, and policy leaders. This ecosystem of partners forms a living laboratory where creativity and research accelerate innovation.
Fourth, REEFLINE advances ocean literacy and ocean justice. Through citizen science, school programs, community workshops, and hands-on coral outplanting, it expands access to marine science and empowers people—especially those historically excluded from environmental decision-making—to participate in restoration.
Fifth, many coastal regulations were written for a different era and no longer reflect the ecological pressures or community expectations of today. In Miami, this gap is especially visible. REEFLINE aims to be a blueprint model for ocean stewardship and governance, one that pairs scientific standards with community participation with measurable ecological outcomes.
